1985 dolls | 1986 dolls | 1987 dolls | Unreleased dolls
In 1987 the three 11 inch Starlight Girls were the
only dolls released, while there were several new
playsets. Unfortunately it was the last year before the
Jem doll line was cancelled and this was probably an attempt by
Hasbro to release dolls that looked more like regular people with regular hairstyles and
outfits, rather than outrageous rockstars with punk hair colors. It seems Hasbro also tried
saving money on not including cassette tapes. These were also the only dolls
that didn't include a single accesory (like a mike, instrument, boombox, camera)
other than their clothing pieces, hairpick and stand.
The Starlight Girls were completely the invention of the main writer for the cartoon episodes, Christy Marx, but Hasbro decided to turn three of the regular twelve; Ashley, Ba Nee and Krissie into dolls. Thereafter Hasbro requested the cartoon episode writers to feature these particular three characters more in the cartoon storylines, which we got to see the result of in the episodes "The Jem Jam" Part 1 and 2, "The Fan" aswell as "Treasure Hunt". The artwork on the back of the boxes, for some reason, features a picture of Starlight House, instead of Starlight Mansion.
