Jem Episode Guide
Page One

The Beginning
Written by Christy Marx

Jem and the Holograms are a big rockband, and Jem thinks back on how it all began, with the unexpected death of Jerrica and Kimbers father. He left them two inheritances of his, the home for foster girls, Starlight House, and half of the music company, Starlight Music. The other half was left to Eric, who has taken control of the company, and plans to turn Starlight Music into the most powerful recording company in the country. Eric has arranged a battle of the bands in the park tomorrow, and the Misfits are going to win, because Eric made sure the other bands are so lousy that the Misfits will sound terrific. A little box arrives to Jerrica, that reveals the best inheritance of her father.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Synergy, Rio, Eric, Starlight Girls (Ashley, Ba Nee, Deidre, Terri, Lela, Anne, Marianne, Joellen, Becky, Nancy, Delaree), Howard, Mrs. Bailey, Zipper, Limp Lizards, Eric's secretary.

Songs:
"Outta My Way" The Misfits
"Only The Beginning" Jem and the Holograms
"Winning Is Everything" The Misfits

Other notes:
This episode was filled out with extra scenes and/or partly re-animated.

Aja is the character we get to see first of all, as she steps out of the Rockin' Roadster and the public screams her name over and over. Then comes Shana, Kimber and Jem at last. I think this was a good idea by Christy to introduce the main characters and their name one by one.

Kimber is playing an acoustic guitar. Although in the later episode "Old Meets New" Kimber says "What good is a guitar if you can't plug it in". Aja goes around with a drum stick drumming on things. But in the later episode "Talent Search Part 1", Aja is, according to herself, hopeless on drums.

The first Starlight Girl that we get a close look at is Lela, and the first one who has a speaking line is Becky.

Starlight Music used to have a guard name Harry in the reception but Eric fired him when Emmett died.

The Misfits are introduced as they ride in on motorcycles shaped as guitars. The extra scenes explain them as their new "toys" which are to be used in their next photo session.

Jerrica thinks the Misfits and their music is trash.

Just when Jerrica has received the earrings, the wind blows open the window and the lights go out. Then a hologram of Synergy appears, almost suggesting that Synergy needed to pass through the window.

Jerrica asks Synergy the first time she wants her to project a hologram that talks.

When Rio saves Jerrica and the Holograms from falling off the cliff with the Rockin' Roadster, he ends up in the newspaper. The newspaper is "Daily Bugle" and says "Amazing Rescue" "Local youth Rio Pacheco saves rock group the Holograms from certain death", "Pacheco credits mysterious leadsinger 'Jem' with help in rescue", another article says "Hot new act wins band contest!".

In the music video of "Winning Is Everything" by the Misfits, Pizzazz wins the contest "Miss Punk International". Stormer is miss conduct and Roxy miss information.

Disaster
Written by Christy Marx

The Countess Danielle Du Voisin invites Jem and the Holograms to a party on her yatch, where they meet the rock video host Lindsey Pierce and the director Anthony Julian. The Misfits manage to get onboard and crash the party.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Synergy, Rio, Eric, Lin-Z, Starlight Girls (Ashley, Ba Nee, Krissie, Deidre, Terri, Lela, Anne, Marianne, Joellen, Becky, Nancy, Delaree), Howard, Danielle, Anthony, Mrs. Bailey, Zipper, firemen.

Songs:
"Like A Dream" Jem and the Holograms
"Click/Clash" Jem and the Holograms/The Misfits
"Makin' Mischief" The Misfits

Other notes:
This episode was filled out with extra scenes and/or partly re-animated.

The first time they see Starlight Mansion Jerrica thinks it's "magificant".

Kimber comes up with the name "Starlight Mansion".

The Starlight Girls each get their own room.

Jem and the Holograms are featured on magazines like "Rock TV", "Boooo Magazine" and "Quiz".

Danielle's yacht is called "Du Voisin".

Jerrica watches Lin-Z's rock video show all the time.

It was Lin-Z who introduced Anthony Julian to Jem and the Holograms.

Jerrica attempts to kiss Rio while she's Jem. And she is even about to reveal her secret, if it wasn't for the Misfits interrupting them.

The music video of "Makin' Mischief" by the Misfits is the one that the Spice Girls ripped off when they released their first single in the 90's.

Kimber's Rebellion
Written by Christy Marx

Jem and the Holograms are in Paris where Anthony is directing their first music video. Eric sends Zipper to Paris, to sabotage their video any way he can. Ashley sneaks out to the Misfits, who take her in. When Jem and the Holograms return, they learn that the Misfits are far ahead with the advertisement, so now it's time for Jem and the Holograms to get down to business.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Rio, Eric, Lin-Z, Starlight Girls (Ashley, Ba Nee, Krissie, Deidre, Terri, Lela, Anne, Marianne, Joellen, Becky, Nancy, Delaree), Danielle, Anthony, Zipper, Bouncer, Brian Morris radio DJ, Lin-Z's guard, captain.

"Gettin' Down To Business" Jem and the Holograms
"I Got My Eye On You" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:

Rio is unfaithful (or he thinks he is) to Jerrica for the first time by kissing Jem. He directly says "No, this is wrong, I can't hurt Jerrica like this".

Kimber is jealous that Jem gets all the attention.

Kimber was going to reveal Jem's identity, if Shana hadn't stopped her. She thinks Rio has the right to know.

Kimber and Rio has one of their talks. They have another one in "Glitter And Gold", and a third in "Hollywood Jem Part 2: And the Winner Is...".

In France we get to see the Eiffel tower, Montmartre, Moulin Rouge, and Arc de Triomphe.

In the music video of "Twilight In Paris", Jem walks by places and stores called "L'Apollina", "Lapin Mill", "Cafe Monteria" and "Cetsib".

The british band Duran Duran is mentioned.

In the Misfits hang out club, there is a girl that looks exactly like Ashley except she has light blonde hair instead of yellow.

According to the Misfits: A Misfit never asks for anything, a Misfit takes whatever they want, and a Misfit never says "please" or "thank you".

Jem and the Holograms are driving by some stores back in LA, like "Cleaners", "Records", "KTOAD".

In the beginning of the music video of "Gettin' Down To Business" the Holograms put up a Jem poster on a wall, and right next to it to the right, is a poster of someone that very much looks like Becky of the Starlight Girls.

On the first album of Jem and the Holograms, the Holograms are not featured on the cover.

Kimber's favorite radio station is KMAX.

Pizzazz slaps Lin-Z. The Misfits aren't allowed back on Lin-Z' show until the episode "Broadway Magic".

Kimber is about to get kidnapped. Like she is in several other episodes.

Frame Up
Written by Christy Marx

The Misfits have agreed to be the warm up act for Jem and the Holograms for their concert in Las Vegas, but only because they plan to become the main act. They invite their new little friend Ashley along to help them.

"Deception" Jem and the Holograms
"Too Close For Comfort" Jem and the Holograms
"Truly Outrageous" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:

Jem and Rio kiss again, but they're caught by the Holograms, and Rio is embarassed. Something he doesn't seem to be so much in later episodes.

There is a big harp in Starlight Mansion.

Pizzazz considers herself the most intelligent one of the Misfits.

There's a store called "Leo's Super Beer", and one called "Keys" in LA.

Pizzazz hits on Rio.

Stormer and Ashley form some kind of a bond with each other here. In a later episode "Starbright Part 2 Colliding Stars" Stormer seems to be worried it's Ashley when she hears one of the Starlight Girls is going blind.

Pizzazz gets furious when Eric calls her by her real name Phyllis.

The Battle Of The Bands
Written by Christy Marx

Jem and the Holograms are getting ready to compete against the Misfits in the Battle Of The Bands. Before the contest Eric kidnaps Ashley, and gives Jem and the Holograms 30 minutes to get to the Starlight Drive-In, without a word to anyone. If Jem and the Holograms don't make it to the contest in time, Eric gets Starlight Music, and the Misfits get the Mansion and the movie contract.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Synergy, Rio, Eric, Starlight Girls (Ashley, Ba Nee, Krissie, Deidre, Terri, Lela, Anne, Marianne, Joellen, Becky, Nancy, Delaree), Howard, Danielle, Zipper, Malone private detective, Dumbo.

"She's Got The Power" Jem and the Holograms
"Takin' It All" The Misfits
"Music Is Magic" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:
This episode was filled out with extra scenes and/or partly re-animated.

Starlight Music has a parking entrance which we never get to see again in the series.

The private detective Malone actually sees Synergy and figures out that Jem and Jerrica are the same person. He finds out Emmett Benton owned Starlight Drive-In. He takes a picture and gives to Eric. Eric actually keeps this photo and mentions it again in the later episode "The Presidential Dilemma".

Synergy is brought to Starlight Mansion. Until now she had been pretty much unprotected at the Starlight Drive-In.

This is the first time Synergy is being taken apart, it also happens in the episodes "Out Of The Past" and "The Presidential Dilemma".

When the reporter is standing in front of the Music Bowl, there are several people behind him that look like Jem and the Holograms and the Misfits. He is talking about fans, but they must have done a good job if they dressed out as Jem and the Holograms.

Zipper is a very good motorcycle driver.

Pizzazz talks right into the camera, to us viewers.

Eric actually hits Jerrica in the face, but Rio hits Eric back.

There is another sign on top of the Starlight Music roof, of Jem, than the one in the rest of the series.

Starbright Part One: "Falling Star"
Written by Christy Marx

Howard is throwing Jem and the Holograms a party to celebrate the start of their movie. Anthony introduces Jem to Video, who wants to film a documentary about the film. The first day at the studio, Jem and the Holograms find out that the studio has been sold. Eric is now in charge of the picture, he has a new script and plans to make the make the new co-stars of the movie, the Misfits, the hottest stars in Hollywood. The contract says that if Jem and the Holograms fail to perform for any reason, they are out.

Characters:

Songs:
"Who Is He Kissing" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:
This episode was filled out with extra scenes and/or partly re-animated.

The Starlight Mansion is apparently located in the mountains.

Danielle makes a new line of Jem and the Holograms fashions.

Lin-Z has completely changed her look out of recognition. This has to be the biggest change a character went through without having a reason, such as Hasbro releasing a doll where changes were needed to resemble the doll.

Synergy can project 600 holographic images a minute without powerloss.

Anthony is the one who introduces Video to Jem and the Holograms. And according to Anthony, Video is the brightest talent in the video tape scene today.

Rio thinks Jem looks good, she "makes the air sizzle like some bright and dazzling dream".

In the music video of the song "Who Is He Kissing?" by Jem and the Holograms, Jerrica is reading a newspaper with the headline "Who is he kissing?" and a picture of Rio.

The Gabor mansion can not be located far from the Starlight Mansion, since you can see what they're doing at Starlight Mansion through binoculars from the Gabor mansion.

Until this episode Pizzazz had never told the other Misfits that her father was rich. Pizzazz doesn't care so much about money according to herself, probably because she has much of it herself. She cares about being famous.

Anthony was the director of the movie Starbright.

Jem is forced to say no to makeup, so that the makeup person won't touch her holographic disguise.

Kimber meets Jeff as he catches her when she is about to sit down and someone is grabbing her chair for Pizzazz.

All Harvey cares about is business and money, and keeping Pizzazz happy, to keep her out of his hair.

Starbright Part 2: "Colliding Stars"
Written by Christy Marx

Jerrica has just found out from an eye doctor that in a matter of months, perhaps even weeks, Ba Nee will be blind. In hope to afford the 250.000 dollars laser surgery, Jem and the Holograms go back to finish the movie, but this time it's on Eric's terms, which is that Jerrica become his assistant. Now the Misfits are the stars, and when they find out that one of the Starlight girls needs an operation to save her eye sight, they realize that Jem and the Holograms can't quit, no matter what the Misfits do to them.

Jerrica would risk her life for the Starlight Girls.

Ba Nee likes to read.

Ba Nee has her own room in Starlight Mansion.

Starbright Part Three: "Rising Star"
Written by Christy Marx

After Roxy sets of a series of explosions in a scene, trapping Kimber inbetween, Jem and the Holograms quit the movie for good. When the crew members who also quit, offer to work on a Jem movie for free, Jem and the Holograms hope to still be able to raise the money for Ba Nee's operation. At the same time the Misfits start recording their own movie, and send over a disguised Clash as a spy to wreck the Jem movie.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Rio, Eric, Lin-Z, Video, Clash, Starlight Girls (Ashley, Ba Nee, Deidre, Terri, Lela, Anne, Joellen, Nancy), Danielle, Howard, Anthony, Jeff, Harvey, Nick Mann actor, Miguel film crew, Georgia makeup artist, ophthalmologist, Carrie film crew, Debra film crew, Patricia film crew, Mark film crew, Elzer film loader, Corwin cinematographer.

Songs:
"Puttin' It All Togheter" Jem and the Holograms
"Welcome to the Jungle" The Misfits
"People Who Care" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:
This episode was filled out with extra scenes and/or partly re-animated.

We get to see Clash without her pink and green haircolors, as a blonde.

The film Starbright is not Jem's autobiography, but it is a very honest human interest story, accoring to Anthony. Rio plays the rocker Johnny Stone. They wrote a dussin new songs for the movie. There was even a soundtrack.

This episode was aired before the real life group Guns & Roses released their song "Welcome To The Jungle", so the Misfits song predates it.

A scene from the movie Starbright is shown in a later episode "Hollywood Jem Part 2".

Howard Sands regains control over the film World Studio again.

The Misfits movie is called "The Misfits Hit It Big".

The scene where all the people are running on the street from the Misfits movie to Jem and the Holograms' movie, is the scene used when Lin-Z presents repeats of a song at the end of some episodes.

The check that Jerrica receives for the first share of the movie's profits has an address written on it: "Bank of S.M. Lieber 6007 Sepulveda, Van Nuys. CA 90067". We also learn that Howard Sands has a middle name starting with an "E".

The World Hunger Shindig
Written by Mary Skrenes

Jem and the Holograms are going to perform in the World Hunger Shindig in Houston. Eric, who is the promoter, brings the Misfits along. Miss Sally allows the Misfits to perform, but they can't be on the live album unless someone backs out. So Eric plans to have Zipper get rid of Jem and the Holograms. Kimber finds out that Sean, one of the other performers whom she has started to like, is actually an old friend of Pizzazz.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Rio, Eric, Sean, Zipper, Miss Sally Brown, Ellen Sue Tanner, C.B. Dodd, Curly.

Songs:
"We Can Make A Difference" Jem and the Holograms
"Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" The Misfits
"Share A Little Bit Of Yourself" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:
Kimber writes alot of, if not all of Jem and the Holograms' songs, and one she wrote was "We Can Make A Difference".

Pizzazz and Sean know each other from before, they met at a club in London, back then Sean was a little more tough according to Pizzazz.

Kimber has a good hand with animals.

Synergy makes ones of her biggest holograms of the entire series, a huge weather hologram.

Zipper works for Eric for a flat fee, not procentage.

Adventure In China
Written by Beth Bornstein

The chinese government has invited Jem and the Holograms to perform at the great wall. Eric has only managed to get the Misfits on a second rate tour, but when they see Jem getting stuck in customs when refusing to take of her earrings, the Misfits realize how important the earrings must be for Jem. Roxy manage to steal the Jemstar earrings, and Eric has them massproduced. The Misfits replace Jem and the Holograms at the summer palace concert wearing star earrings, and will replace them at the great wall too, unless Jem and the Holograms find the real Jemstar earrings in time.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Rio, Eric, Lin, Lin's father, air hostess.

Songs:
"You Can't Catch Me" The Misfits
"Something Is Missing In My Life" Jem and The Holograms
"Love Unites Us" Jem and The Holograms

Other notes:
Stormer is reading a magazine called "Music USA".

Roxy doesn't care about seeing the Great wall of China, she considers it just a big wall.

Jem and the Holograms are famous in China.

Roxy doesn't notice Misfits is mispelled, but Pizzazz does, which speaks for that Roxy is illiterate.

The Misfits and Eric, are wondering why the earrings are so important to Jem, and Stormer have noticed that she always wears them when she performs.

Aja speaks a bit chinese.

Aja is in tears when she realizes they definitely have to cancel the great wall concert, maybe because China is her homeland.

Pizzazz flirts with Rio again.

Last Resorts
Written by Roger Slifer

Jem and the Holograms are going on a vacation to a ski resort, where they find out that the owner will lose his lodge and mountain if he doesn't pay his mortgage payment to his banker by the end of the week. Jem and the Holograms decide to help him out by putting on a concert at the end of the week, if the guests give him another chance. Eric who owns the other resort, is interested in the property, and suggests a skirace between Jem and the Holograms and the Misfits, winner takes all.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Rio, Eric, Clash, Zipper, Rick Franklin owner of ski lodge Green Fern, ski instructor Svensson.

Songs:
"You Gotta Be Fast" The Misfits
"It's Workin' Out/It's Doin' Me In" Jem and the Holograms/The Misfits
"Love Is Here" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:
Rick Franklin is friends with Howard Sands.

One of five episodes in the Jem series that shows snow, the other four are "Danse Time", "Journey to Shangri-La", "Middle Of Nowhere", and "Homeland, Heartland".

Jerrica thinks Rio is impossible sometimes.

The ski instructor Svensson, seems to be from Sweden judging by his blonde hair, the colors of his clothes which are the same as the Swedish flag, his accent, and his last name which is one of the most common ones in Sweden, and also at the time this episode was made the undoubtably best slalom and giant slalom skier in the world was a Swede named Ingemar Stenmark. As a fun note, the singing voice of Jem, Britta Phillips' (aswell as her sisters name Inga) first name is a Swedish name.

Kimber likes the Swedish skier.

In the music video of "It's Workin' Out/It's Doin' Me In" by Jem and the Holograms/The Misfits, it seems like Clash is part of the Misfits.

Like in some other episodes there's a sign that says "Jem and Holograms" without the "the".

Jem is a much better skier than Pizzazz and Roxy.

Rio is close to discovering that Jem and Jerrica is the same person, as he finds Jerrica where only Jem is supposed to be.

Synergy's holograms projection is being blocked when Jerrica is in a cave, in another city, and blocked by a bear.

Rio gets a hologram projected over his body, along with sound, without even noticing it.

In Stitches
Written by Mary Skrenes

Jem and the Holograms are invited to compete in a rock fashion competition in Venice, Italy. But Shana is having trouble coming up with ideas for designs. Once they get to Venice, the Misfits, who are also in the competition, have Zipper steal Shana's designs, leaving Jem and the Holograms with nothing for the competition.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Rio, Eric, Lin-Z, Starlight Girls (Ashley, Ba Nee, Krissie, Deidre, Terri, Lela, Anne, Marianne, Joellen, Becky, Nancy, Delaree), Danielle, Zipper, Tony Cassini promoter, Tito gonldolier.

Songs:
"It Depends On The Mood I'm In" Jem and the Holograms
"Designing Woman" The Misfits
"Time Is Runnin' Out" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:
Ashley is interested in fashion design.

Shana's room is on the second floor furthest to the left, watching the mansion from the front.

Although it's probably not directly mentioned in any episode, it's pretty much settled that Jem and the Holograms live in Los Angeles. But while Jem and the Holograms are on the plane to Italy and Jem transforms back to Jerrica because of satellite interference with Synergy's transmission, she says "Jerrica is supposed to be in New York, not on this plane", but maybe Jerrica needed an excuse why she wasn't around while Jem and the others were away.

During the Misfits song "Designing Woman", in the shoestore there are shoeboxes that say "CA-NIKE" instead of "Nike", "Shebok" instead of "Reebook", "TUNA" instead of "Puma", "Reverse" instead of "Converse", "Raddidis" instead of "Adidas".

The costumes designed by Shana in this episode, even though they're stolen and dyed black by the Misfits, they appeared in later episodes worn by Jem and the Holograms in the original color.

Apparently the Misfits run faster in high heels than Jem and the Holograms do in sneakers, as the Misfits catch up with Jem and the Holograms when chasing them.

The Rock Fashion Book
Written by Rick Merwin

Jem and the Holograms accept a business proposal for a rock fashion book, in which they will be wearing Shana's designs. The Misfits decide to make their own rock fashion book, and have it out first. But when no one will publish their book, the Misfits decide to wreck the Jem book.

Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, The Misfits, Rio, Clash, Howard, Harvey, Robert Arlington publisher, Robin whale trainer, Harvey photographer, guard, Soo Mi art director, Richard Carling photographer.

Songs:
"Come On In, The Water's Fine" Jem and the Holograms
"We're Off And Runnin'" The Misfits
"We Can Change It" Jem and the Holograms

Other notes:
In this episode the character Robert Arlington is referring to the fashion contest Jem and the Holograms won in the episode In Stitches, which places this episode after that one.

Kimber likes dolphins, she thinks they're cute.

Jerrica is having trouble underwater, the Jem star earrings are shorting out by the deep water.

Rio seems concerned what Jerrica will think about him holding Jem after she makes it up after almost dying in the water. But Jem leads him on and tells him to hold her and that Jerrica would understand.

The rollercoaster The Misfits are riding with is called "Monster Machine".

Stormer is afraid of bats.

Kimber is afraid of heights.

Synergy can create sound effects to scare away bats.

There's a newspaper called "Daily Day News" with an article on Jem and the Holograms.

Harvey Gabor hates to make snap decisions.
