The Beginning
Written by Christy Marx

Synopsis:
Jem and the Holograms are a big rockband, and Jem thinks back on how it all began, with the unexpected death of Jerrica and Kimbers father. He left them two inheritances of his, the home for foster girls, Starlight House, and half of the music company, Starlight Music. The other half was left to Eric, who has taken control of the company, and plans to turn Starlight Music into the most powerful recording company in the country. Eric has arranged a battle of the bands in the park tomorrow, and the Misfits are going to win, because Eric made sure the other bands are so lousy that the Misfits will sound terrific. A little box arrives to Jerrica, that reveals the best inheritance of her father.

Bloopers:
At the cemetary in the last clip where Rio and Jerrica are walking away from Eric, Jerrica's hair appears to be pink.

When we for the first time get to see the inside of Starlight House, Kimber is playing an acoustic guitar, and Aja is going around with the vaccuumcleaner playing with drumsticks. And we all know Kimber was the keyboard player and Aja the guitarplayer at the time. This isn't really a blooper, but perhaps a script leftover based on Hasbro's early plans where the Holograms played these instruments.

Also in the above scene, Kimber's right ear seems misplaced, or perhaps it's supposed to be her hair but was colored wrong.

Only in final retakes version: At the end of the music video of "Outta My Way" by the Misfits, when Pizzazz is about to sit on the throne she moves in front of a window, from which the light effects are displayed over the cel of Pizzazz instead of behind.

At the Starlight Drive-in, After Kimber is turned back into herself and says "that's even better". Aja turns back into Kimber, Shana into Aja and Kimber (who is first invisible because of a blooper) into Shana. Corrected.

Only in final retakes version: At the Starlight Drive-in when the roadster first appears, in the close-up of Jerrica and Kimber, Kimber suddenly wears her original outfit, which she doesn't even own yet.

At the Starlight Drive-in when the roadster first appears it already says Jem on the hood. But you might argue this is because the car was named Jem and maybe that's where Jem got her name.

In a short clip where the roadster is about to go over the cliff, Shana is in the driver's seat instead of Aja, and Aja is where Shana sat before, then they've suddenly changed their seats back again.

When Ashley says "30 dollars, but where do I get 30 dollars?" her hair in the neck flashes on and off. Corrected.

Only in final retakes version: When the misfits are taking a look at Jem and the Holograms' instruments before they steal them and drive away with them, the banner above the stage, where Jem and the Holograms just performed says "Hologram" without the "s".

Only in final retakes version: At Starlight Music, after Eric says to the Misfits that their new motorcycles will look great in their next photo session, Pizzazz' dress is partly colored pink, where it's supposed to be white.

In the park after Jem and the Holograms have performed and Jem has created a hologram of Jerrica on another stage. When we see Eric come from the right in the screen moving to the left, the first we see of him he is seen in front of the blonde woman standing in a close-up view to the right on screen, before we see him continue but now from behind her. Corrected.

Trivia:
This episode was made in several different versions. Originally it consisted of three segments, which were later put togheter to form this episode. The titles of the three segments were 1: The Beginning, 2: The Challenge, and 3: Fire!. It then had retakes made, including extended scenes. Read more about the different versions of the material in this episode on Retakes.

Aja is the character we get to see first of all, as she steps out of the Rockin' Roadster and the public screams her name over and over. Then comes Shana, Kimber and Jem at last. I think this was a good idea by Christy to introduce the main characters and their name one by one.

Christy preferred the design of Starlight House in front of Starlight Mansion.

Kimber is playing an acoustic guitar. Although in the later episode "Old Meets New" Kimber says "What good is a guitar if you can't plug it in". Aja goes around with a drum stick drumming on things. But in the later episode "Talent Search Part 1", Aja is, according to herself, hopeless on drums.

The first Starlight Girl that we get a close look at is Lela, and the first one who has a speaking line is Becky.

The Starlight Girl, Deidre, was named after the middle name of Christy's stephdaughter.

Ashley who were originally named "Heather" by Christy, was renamed by someone else at the production who wanted her to be named Ashley.

Nowadays Christy regrets not making less Starlight Girls, as she thinks five might had worked out better in the longrun.

Starlight Music used to have a guard named Harry in the reception but Eric fired him when Emmett died.

Eric's secretary, was named after a secretary at a TV production company where Christy once worked.

The Misfits are introduced as they ride in on motorcycles shaped as guitars. The extra scenes explain them as their new "toys" which are to be used in their next photo session.

Jerrica thinks the Misfits and their music is trash.

Just when Jerrica has received the earrings, the wind blows open the window and the lights go out. Then a hologram of Synergy appears, almost suggesting that Synergy needed to pass through the window.

Christy doesn't think the Rockin' Roadster is a cool car. She would have used a different kind of car.

Howard Sands was named after a real movie producer, but Christy twisted around the name.

Jerrica asks Synergy the first time she wants her to project a hologram that talks.

When Rio saves Jerrica and the Holograms from falling off the cliff with the Rockin' Roadster, he ends up in the newspaper. The newspaper is "Daily Bugle" and says "Amazing Rescue" "Local youth Rio Pacheco saves rock group the Holograms from certain death", "Pacheco credits mysterious leadsinger 'Jem' with help in rescue", another article says "Hot new act wins band contest!".

Christy likes the Misfits song "Winning Is Everything".

In the music video of "Winning Is Everything" by the Misfits, Pizzazz wins the contest "Miss Punk International". Stormer is "miss conduct" and Roxy "miss information".

When Ba Nee says she got money for walking Mrs. Ledger's dog, it's an injoke because Christy was at the moment married to an artist named Peter Ledger.

This is the only episode of the entire series that featured two Misfits songs that were new (not re-used) aswell as not duets with Jem and the Holograms.

Bloopers:
When Ashley runs out of the Starlight House she has unusually long hair, and then when she is saved by the fireman, and starts talking to Jerrica she has extra short hair. Corrected.

Jerrica's eye makeup changes between bright pink to bright blue many times in this episode, even when she hasn't had time to change outfit.

Before the song "Like A Dream", and before Jerrica turns into Jem, she is standing in front of Synergy, but she is too far up so it looks like she is floating in the air, also at the same time Synergy's lights flash right through her head. Corrected.

In the episode "The Beginning", Aja's guitar is smashed to pieces and so is Kimber's keyboard, still both of them appear in the following episodes looking the same. Of course they might have replaced them with the exact looking instrument.

When Jerrica tells her story to Howard Sands, it first looks like Pizzazz is sucking her thumb, and then the thumb goes right through her chin so she is resting her chin in her hand.

When Jerrica and the others first arrive to Starlight Mansion and Mrs. Bailey sees the kitchen for the first time, Lela's skincolor is too bright.

At Starlight Mansion, when Ashley talks to the Misfits at the gates, a black dot on her shoulder flashes to yellow and back.

At Starlight Mansion when the Misfits are being asked questions by reporters, Roxy and Stormer's voice actors say each others lines.

Only in last retakes version: When Jem asks the Misfits to help clean up the mess at Starlight Mansion, Roxy has the same haircolor as Pizzazz for a moment.

When the Misfits are going with their boat to the Countess Danielle Du Voisin's yacht, they suddenly wear their original outfits when the boat is seen from the front.

On Danielle's yacht, when Jem tries to tell Rio her secret identity and is about to kiss him, her eye makeup flashes off and on.

In the music video "Makin' Mischief" at the end of it, one of the men throwing pies suddenly disappears.

Trivia:
This episode was made in several different versions. Originally it consisted of three segments, which were later put togheter to form this episode. The titles of the three segments were 4: Nowhere to Go, 5: The Mansion, and 6: The Yacht. It then had retakes made, including extended scenes. Read more about the different versions of the material in this episode on Retakes.

When this episode originally aired, it had the title "Set Backs".

The first time they see Starlight Mansion Jerrica thinks it's "magnificant".

Kimber comes up with the name "Starlight Mansion".

The Starlight Girls each get their own room.

Jem and the Holograms are featured on magazines like "Rock TV", "Boooo Magazine" and "Quiz".

Danielle's yacht is called "Du Voisin".

Jerrica watches Lin-Z's rock video show all the time.

It was Lin-Z who introduced Anthony Julian to Jem and the Holograms.

The name Anthony Julian is a injoke on Christy's stephson Julian Anthony.

Jerrica attempts to kiss Rio while she's Jem. And she is even about to reveal her secret, if it wasn't for the Misfits interrupting them.

The music video of "Makin' Mischief" by the Misfits is the one that the Spice Girls ripped off when they released their first single in the 90's.

Bloopers:
On Danielle's yacht, when the Misfits are done causing mischief and leave in their boat, Roxy suddenly has a purple dress instead of the green.

Only in the final retakes version: In France, After Rio follows Kimber to talk to her, when Kimber turns around you can see she is suddenly wearing her original outfit, and then back to the correct outfit in the next clip. This is the second blooper where this happens to Kimber.

In the music video of "Twilight In Paris", close to the end in a clip with the Eiffel tower, Kimber has pink hair instead of red.

In the music video of "I Got My Eye On You", Aja's guitar switches shape and color.

At the end of the music video of "I Got My Eye On You", the last time we see the Holograms behind Jem, Jem is dancing and singning, but the Holograms have a frozen pose.

Only in final retakes version: When the Misfits are driving to Lin-z's studio in their van, it's first Pizzazz who is driving, then Roxy when the car arrives at the studio, and then Stormer a second later.

When the Misfits are stopped by the guard outside Lindsey's studio, the coloring of the legs of Roxy's pants have switched, and in the next clip it's correct again.

Trivia:

Rio is unfaithful (or he thinks he is) to Jerrica for the first time by kissing Jem. He directly says "No, this is wrong, I can't hurt Jerrica like this".

Kimber is jealous that Jem gets all the attention.

Kimber was going to reveal Jem's identity, if Shana hadn't stopped her. She thinks Rio has the right to know.

Kimber and Rio has one of their talks. They have another one in "Glitter And Gold", and a third in "Hollywood Jem Part 2: And the Winner Is...".

In France we get to see the Eiffel tower, Montmartre, Moulin Rouge, and Arc de Triomphe.

In the music video of "Twilight In Paris", Jem walks by places and stores called "L'Apollina", "Lapin Mill", "Cafe Monteria" and "Cetsib".

The british band Duran Duran is mentioned.

In the Misfits hang out club, there is a girl that looks exactly like Ashley except she has light blonde hair instead of yellow.

According to the Misfits: A Misfit never asks for anything, a Misfit takes whatever they want, and a Misfit never says "please" or "thank you".

Jem and the Holograms are driving by some stores back in LA, like "Cleaners", "Records", "KTOAD".

In the beginning of the music video of "Gettin' Down To Business" the Holograms put up a Jem poster on a wall, and right next to it to the right, is a poster of someone that very much looks like Becky of the Starlight Girls.

On the first album of Jem and the Holograms, the Holograms are not featured on the cover.

Kimber's favorite radio station is KMAX.

Pizzazz slaps Lin-Z. The Misfits aren't allowed back on Lin-Z' show until the episode "Broadway Magic".

Kimber is about to get kidnapped. Like she is in several other episodes.

"I Got My Eye On You" is one of Christy's favorite Jem songs.

There's a store called "Leo's Super Beer", and one called "Keys" in LA.

Pizzazz hits on Rio.

Stormer and Ashley form some kind of a bond with each other here. In a later episode "Starbright Part 2 Colliding Stars" Stormer seems to be worried it's Ashley when she hears one of the Starlight Girls is going blind.

Pizzazz gets furious when Eric calls her by her real name Phyllis.

When we see the Holograms disguised as old ladies parked outside of Starlight Music, in the last clip of old Shana she is colored to bright.

After Synergy has been moved to Starlight Mansion, put back togheter and opened her eyes, the lights that come out of Synergy's eyes, is placed outside of Synergy's eyes. Corrected.

In the last scene of the music video to "She's Got The Power", when Synergy has jumped back into the computer, part of her hairband flashes in another, lighter color. Corrected.

At Starlight Mansion, after Kimber says "here it is the big night and I don't know what to wear", part of Kimber's jacket is unpainted and you can see right through it.

At Starlight Mansion, after Rio has left, and Jerrica is about to transform into Jem, the door behind her suddenly has the door knob on the wrong side, and also the door knob is pretty high up, in height with her shoulders. Corrected.

Starlight Music has a parking entrance which we never get to see again in the series.

The private detective Malone actually sees Synergy and figures out that Jem and Jerrica are the same person. He finds out Emmett Benton owned Starlight Drive-In. He takes a picture and gives to Eric. Eric actually keeps this photo and mentions it again in the later episode "The Presidential Dilemma".

Synergy is brought to Starlight Mansion. Until now she had been pretty much unprotected at the Starlight Drive-In.

This is the first time Synergy is being taken apart, it also happens in the episodes "Out Of The Past" and "The Presidential Dilemma".

When the reporter is standing in front of the Music Bowl, there are several people behind him that look like Jem and the Holograms and the Misfits. He is talking about fans, but they must have done a good job if they dressed out as Jem and the Holograms.

Zipper is a very good motorcycle driver.

Pizzazz talks right into the camera, to us viewers.

Eric actually hits Jerrica in the face, but Rio hits Eric back.

There is another sign on top of the Starlight Music roof, of Jem, than the one in the rest of the series.

There is a femlae character among the movie crew people, who has been re-used for later episodes, but as a new character. Apparently they used the same character model, but new colors. She shows up in the "The Jem Jam Part 1" and "Hollywood Jem Part One: For Your Consideration... ".

Bloopers:
At Starlight Mansion when Mrs. Bailey asks for Jerrica and Jem walks away, Rio's arm moves right through Jem and then through Kimber, and back.

After Jerrica has checked on Synergy's power level and walks towards the holographic wall and she changes back to Jem, the haircolor stays blonde and the outfit is her original instead of the outfit that Danielle designed for her. Corrected.

After the above blooper and after Rio calls as Jem walks away, Jem's earrings are pink as her hair.

In the music video of "Who Is He Kissing", Jerrica's outfit is suddenly blue instead of white, later Jerrica has pink hair, then Jerrica looses her tight and instead gains sleeves on her dress. All of these were corrected.

When Pizzazz says she wants her name spoken with awe, her makeup flashes between pink and purple.

At the World Studios, when the Misfits start getting their makeup, Stormer's arm is the same color as her top, pink.

When Pizzazz tells everyone her father owns the studio, one of the sleeves on Roxy's shirt is missing. Corrected.

Anthony Julian is colored too brightly when he tells clash and Pizzazz to leave the set.

Kimber is lying on the bed with pink hair when Jerrica comes home to Starlight Mansion.

In the music video of "Jealousy", Rio's bangs is once skincolored instead of purple.

Only for final retakes version: Right after the music video for "Jealousy", Rio gets brown eyes for a few seconds, which is corrected in the next clip.

Before the reporters are let into studio 20 at the World studios, the doors are open, and then they're closed and look different and Miguel has to open them.

When the reporters have surrounded Jem and the Holograms and Nick, Shana's outfit isn't correctly colored on the shoulder and earring, one of each is white and on the other side they're yellow.

When Jem and the Holograms arrive for their big number and Eric points and says the Misfits are doing a song instead. Eric's pointing hand starts behind Jem shoulder and goes right through it.

Trivia:
This episode was filled out with extra scenes and/or partly re-animated.

Starlight Mansion is apparently located in the mountains.

Danielle makes a new line of Jem and the Holograms fashions.

From this episode and on, the main characters original outfits (aswell as their faces somewhat) were changed. Improvements were made, but first and foremost they were supposed to resemble the Hasbro dolls more, which meant that Jem's pink belt became white. Jerrica's pink and blue striped dress with a red belt, a hat and pink shoes, became white and blue striped with a white belt, without hat and blue shoes. Pizzazz's dress got slightly different design, she got an bracelet, she lost a legband, and switched the sock to ther other leg. Roxy's top became purple instead of black, her tights became multicolored instead of pink and green, she lost her necklace, got a bracelet, her belt changed shape, shoe got new shoes. Lin-Z has completely changed her look, out of recognition, even though she wasn't even available as a doll. Rio's outfit got no changes on the other hand.

Synergy can project 600 holographic images a minute without powerloss.

Anthony is the one who introduces Video to Jem and the Holograms. And according to Anthony, Video is the brightest talent in the video tape scene today.

Rio thinks Jem looks good, she "makes the air sizzle like some bright and dazzling dream".

In the music video of the song "Who Is He Kissing?" by Jem and the Holograms, Jerrica is reading a newspaper with the headline "Who is he kissing?" and a picture of Rio.

The Gabor mansion can not be located far from the Starlight Mansion, since you can see what they're doing at Starlight Mansion through binoculars from the Gabor mansion.

Until this episode Pizzazz had never told the other Misfits that her father was rich. Pizzazz doesn't care so much about money according to herself, probably because she has much of it herself. She cares about being famous.

Anthony was the director of the movie Starbright.

Jem is forced to say no to makeup, so that the makeup person won't touch her holographic disguise.

Kimber meets Jeff as he catches her when she is about to sit down and someone is grabbing her chair for Pizzazz.

All Harvey cares about is business and money, and keeping Pizzazz happy, to keep her out of his hair.

We get to see Clash without her pink and green haircolors, as a blonde.

The film Starbright is not Jem's autobiography, but it is a very honest human interest story, accoring to Anthony. Rio plays the rocker Johnny Stone. They wrote a dussin new songs for the movie. There was even a soundtrack.

This episode was aired before the real life group Guns & Roses released their song "Welcome To The Jungle", so the Misfits song predates it.

A scene from the movie Starbright is shown in a later episode "Hollywood Jem Part 2".

Howard Sands regains control over the film World Studio again.

The Misfits movie is called "The Misfits Hit It Big".

The scene where all the people are running on the street from the Misfits movie to Jem and the Holograms' movie, is the scene used when Lin-Z presents repeats of a song at the end of some episodes.

The check that Jerrica receives for the first share of the movie's profits has an address written on it: "Bank of S.M. Lieber 6007 Sepulveda, Van Nuys. CA 90067". We also learn that Howard Sands has a middle name starting with an "E".

When Jem is in the bath and changes back to Jerrica because Roxy steals her earrings, Jerrica is wearing a robe instead of a bathingsuit, which means she was bathing with that underneath the hologram.

When the music video of the song "You can't Catch Me" by the Misfits has ended, Jem and the Holograms have changed outfits compared to before and after the music video.

Trivia:
When this episode first aired, there was no episode title at the beginning.

Stormer is reading a magazine called "Music USA".

Roxy doesn't care about seeing the Great wall of China, she considers it just a big wall.

Jem and the Holograms are famous in China.

Roxy doesn't notice Misfits is mispelled, but Pizzazz does, which speaks for that Roxy is illiterate.

The Misfits and Eric, are wondering why the earrings are so important to Jem, and Stormer has noticed that Jem always wears them when she performs.

Aja speaks a bit chinese.

Aja is in tears when she realizes they definitely have to cancel the great wall concert, maybe because China is her homeland.

When the owner of Green Fern says he can't risk any more accidents, after Jem and the holograms have just been saved from the ski lift, his hair is where an ear should be.

During Svensson's line "On your marks, get set, go!", the audience standing right behind him, changes to a completely different bunch of people, and then back to the previous people standing in the exact same pose as they did to begin with.

At the start of the ski race, Jem and the Holograms and the Misfits, are placed much too close to each other to be able to use their ski poles without hitting each other and falling.

Trivia:
Rick Franklin is friends with Howard Sands.

One of five episodes in the Jem series that shows snow, the other four are "Danse Time", "Journey to Shangri-La", "Middle Of Nowhere", and "Homeland, Heartland".

Jerrica thinks Rio is impossible sometimes.

The ski instructor Svensson, seems to be from Sweden judging by his blonde hair, the colors of his clothes which are the same as the Swedish flag, his accent, and his last name which is one of the most common ones in Sweden, and also at the time this episode was made the undoubtably best slalom and giant slalom skier in the world was a Swede named Ingemar Stenmark. As a fun note, the singing voice of Jem, Britta Phillips' (aswell as her sisters name Inga) first name is a Swedish name.

Kimber likes the Swedish skier.

In the music video of "It's Workin' Out/It's Doin' Me In" by Jem and the Holograms/The Misfits, it seems like Clash is part of the Misfits.

Like in some other episodes there's a sign that says "Jem and Holograms" without the "the".

Jem is a much better skier than Pizzazz and Roxy.

Rio is close to discovering that Jem and Jerrica is the same person, as he finds Jerrica where only Jem is supposed to be.

Synergy's holograms projection is being blocked when Jerrica is in a cave, in another city, and blocked by a bear.

Rio gets a hologram projected over his body, along with sound, without even noticing it.

Trivia:
Ashley is interested in fashion design.

Shana's room is on the second floor furthest to the left, watching the mansion from the front.

Although it's probably not directly mentioned in any episode, it's pretty much settled that Jem and the Holograms live in Los Angeles. But while Jem and the Holograms are on the plane to Italy and Jem transforms back to Jerrica because of satellite interference with Synergy's transmission, she says "Jerrica is supposed to be in New York, not on this plane", but maybe Jerrica needed an excuse why she wasn't around while Jem and the others were away.

During the Misfits song "Designing Woman", in the shoestore there are shoeboxes that say "CA-NIKE" instead of "Nike", "Shebok" instead of "Reebook", "TUNA" instead of "Puma", "Reverse" instead of "Converse", "Raddidis" instead of "Adidas".

The costumes designed by Shana in this episode, even though they're stolen and dyed black by the Misfits, they appeared in later episodes worn by Jem and the Holograms in their original colors.

Apparently the Misfits run faster in high heels than Jem and the Holograms do in sneakers, as the Misfits catch up with Jem and the Holograms when chasing them.

Bloopers:
When Jem fell into the pool with the killer whales, she wore a tank top, however underwater when she changed back to Jerrica, Jerrica is wearing long sleeves, which Rio should have felt when he touches Jem's arms.

When the Misfits show their fashion book to publishers, the photos in the book of the Misfits shows them in their original outfits, which are colored wrong, and which they didn't even wear during their photoshoot.

Trivia:
In this episode the character Robert Arlington is referring to the fashion contest Jem and the Holograms won in the episode In Stitches, which places this episode after that one.

Kimber likes dolphins, she thinks they're cute.

Jerrica is having trouble underwater, the Jem star earrings are shorting out by the deep water.

Rio seems concerned what Jerrica will think about him holding Jem after she makes it up after almost dying in the water. But Jem leads him on and tells him to hold her and that Jerrica would understand.
